Our Purpose

The Pennsylvania Constitution guarantees our citizens the “right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment.” As a Commonwealth, we take great pride in our natural resources and our reputation as a national leader in protecting and preserving our environment.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Department of Energy reports that Pennsylvania’s electric industry ranks fourth highest in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, second highest in sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions and fifth highest in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

While there is growing concern about the damage caused by these greenhouse gases, Pennsylvanians – like everyone else – are using more power. Our demand for electricity is expected to rise 1.5 percent a year in each of the next 10 years. Likewise, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the PJM grid, which coordinates the movement of electricity in 13 states and the District of Columbia, will need at least 13 percent more electricity by 2030.

To help meet our growing demand for electricity in a safe, clean and reliable way, Exelon has applied to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a 20-year extension to Three Mile Island (TMI) Unit 1’s operating license, which expires in 2014. A June 2008 survey by Susquehanna Polling and Research found nearly 90 percent of residents in the eight counties around TMI support its relicensing.

The Pennsylvania Energy Alliance for Generating Reliable Electricity for our Energy Needs (PA Energy Alliance) was formed to promote the use of nuclear energy as a clean, safe, reliable and affordable way to produce electricity.

The PA Energy Alliance is made up of community leaders and organizations representing business, academia, labor, health care, and non-profits that have the credibility and expertise to effectively advocate energy policies that protect our environment and improve our economy.

The goal of the PA Energy Alliance is to educate the public about the environmental and economic benefits of nuclear energy, while providing a forum through which members can express their support for the continued safe operation of Pennsylvania’s five nuclear power plants.

To succeed, the PA Energy Alliance needs people like you who have the experience to make our coalition an effective voice for:

We hope you will join the PA Energy Alliance and help us ensure that Pennsylvania maintains an affordable and reliable supply of electricity to meet our growing demand.
